On October 7, 2022, the world's first vessel equipped with the Wind Challenger was completed. The Wind Challenger is a device that converts wind energy into ship propulsion using a retractable sail (rigid sail). By installing it on a ship, it is expected to reduce environmental impact and improve economic efficiency through a reduction in fuel consumption. Research and development began in 2009 as a joint industry-academia research project led by the University of Tokyo, and since January 2018, Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. have been leading the development.
This vessel is a coal carrier operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. The greenhouse gas reduction effect from the installation of the Wind Challenger is expected to be approximately 5% on the Japan-Australia route and approximately 8% on the Japan-North American West Coast route compared to conventional vessels of the same type.
