LNG is a next-generation fuel with a low environmental impact, offering approximately 100% reductions in sulfur oxides (SOx), approximately 80% reductions in nitrogen oxides (NOx lean combustion), and approximately 30% reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared to conventional marine fuel oil (heavy fuel oil). Oshima Shipbuilding is currently constructing an LNG-fueled coal carrier, aiming for completion in fiscal year 2023, and plans to build a second and third LNG-fueled coal carrier as well.
A key feature of this vessel is the placement of large LNG fuel tanks on the upper deck and the "U"-shaped living quarters, minimizing the reduction in cargo hold volume due to the LNG fuel tanks. This design received Approval in Principal (AIP) from DNV・GL (Norwegian-German Classification Society) in 2015.
